Creating ‘My Kind of City’ with St Augustine's CE Primary School

22.03.21

With the Covid-19 pandemic forcing us to rethink how we learn, how we share public space and travel, PTE devised an online design competition for children to design a new kind of city, that focuses on community, outdoor space and learning from the great outdoors.

As part of our ongoing work in South Kilburn, we joined up with St Augustine's CE Primary School to create ‘My Kind of City’. This lockdown-inspired project prompts children to think about the heroes cities should celebrate, sustainable transport and opportunities for learning outside, and use these ideas to masterplan their own neighbourhood.

This has been an excellent and worthwhile project, that has really engaged children. It’s got them thinking about the importance of city design, what makes cities places people want to live in, green and happy spaces. It has also got one or two children discussing what architects do and considering it as a future career! Thank you for everyone involved in making it such as success.”
Oliver Parsons, Assistant Headteacher

The project was delivered remotely using a pre-filmed tutorial and lesson plans, asking pupils to create architectural drawings and models. The winning design, which stood out among a plethora of creative and provocative responses, was masterplanned by De’Andre in year 2.
