Environmental, Social, and Governance

Our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policy reflects our core values and commitment to responsible practice.

Co-produced in-house, it ensures that the connections we create between people, buildings, and nature foster joyful, comfortable environments. We champion inclusivity, professionalism, and support for all, embedding these principles into our culture and projects. Our governance framework is built on integrity and competence, with clearly stated objectives outlined in our business plan. We actively measure our work against these standards, ensuring accountability and continuous improvement.

Through this policy, we reinforce our dedication to sustainable design, social responsibility, and ethical business practices, shaping a better built environment for all.

Environmental

We create sustainable environments - light, well-ventilated and warm in winter, cool in summer - for the people who use our buildings: clients, residents and our own colleagues in our custom-made, retrofitted workplace.

We review our work, across the whole practice, measuring performance and making iterative improvements that help to lighten the environmental load.

Our projects (including the day-to-day running of our own workplace) go beyond compliance - reducing negative impacts - to nurture life-enhancing spaces in which people, buildings and nature thrive together.

  1. Ensure the connections we make between people, buildings and nature create joyful, comfortable environments (example: Happy Homes Toolkit, POE generally as fed back into design).
  2. Minimise energy and resource footprints by monitoring and measuring our emissions (example: we will publish our carbon reduction plan)
  3. Help all stakeholders to find value in sustainable design, through thought leadership and great comms (example: publishing and promoting our ‘knowledge share’ documents)
Social

PTE has been putting residents and building users front and centre since our practice was formed 50 years ago.

We follow the principle that working with communities and those with lived experiences as fundamental to creating new homes and neighbourhoods, ones that deliver more than just the roof over their heads.

Our behaviours and values guide all that we do and how we work with our clients, as well as how we work with each other. They are published on our website, and describe a friendly, inclusive, and supportive working environment which underpins our practice ethos. Our designs respond to the culture and values of the communities we work with.

  1. Advocate for our values and behaviours, which are inclusive, professional and supportive of all
  2. We build enduring relationships with clients and the communities we work in (POE, conference days, values, culture)
  3. We are passionate about designing social value into homes, places and spaces (example: Happy Homes Toolkit)
Governance

Our governance is shaped by our ethics, goals and values, which embody professional integrity and competence.

Structured, ethical and transparent governance benefits PTE colleagues, collaborators and clients, residents of our projects and the wider community, contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future.

We have a strong knowledge-sharing culture. We measure both quantitative and qualitative elements of our work, learning from every project, and share this knowledge with colleagues, clients (including residents) and the wider world, through our projects and through mentoring, teaching, research and co-production.

  1. Measure our work against our clearly stated objectives of quality and social purpose, set out in our business plan.
  2. We have a transparent decision-making process to ensure alignment of projects and other activities with our objectives.
  3. We have a strong knowledge-sharing culture. We measure both quantitative and qualitative elements of every project; we share this knowledge with colleagues, clients (including residents) and the wider world, through our work, mentoring, teaching and co-design.
