Housing: village and suburb

PTE is engaging with key rural development issues: threats to local services; pressure on infrastructure; balancing demand for commuter and retirement homes with affordable housing for local people; protecting the countryside from neglect or over-development; insertion of new buildings into rural contexts with distinctive vernacular traditions.

Our designs for family houses reinvent popular and familiar forms to suit contemporary lifestyles and combine traditional materials with innovative construction techniques, including off-site fabrication.

Our work includes smaller infill developments, town and village extensions and complete new settlements.

“Saffron Walden is one of England's most beautiful market towns and the design of 'The Avenue' uses this existing context to brilliant effect. This is exactly the kind of scheme that challenges identikit houses by showing how to do something more contextual.”

Richard McCarthy, Director General for Housing and Planning, Department for Communities
