Whitechapel, in the heart of London’s East End, contains many people who, because of ethnic, economic and cultural factors, are often excluded from participating in sports. PTE’s brief was to design high quality sports facilities in a friendly and welcoming building. In particular it was to appeal to members of the Asian community, especially women, as well as be accessible to people with disabilities. Their special needs have been discreetly and efficiently accommodated.
The centre comprises a women-only fitness area, an all-weather pitch, general fitness and training provision, a multi-purpose hall and social areas, including a café and a crèche. All the facilities are at ground level, with a central spine giving direct access to the major areas. The distinctive roof projects beyond the main facade to mark the entrance, and offers the added benefit of natural lighting, with louvres to avoid glare. The centre’s glass-enclosed café provides a social meeting space for the community, as well as sports users.
"PTE’s strong reputation is based on a combination of commercial awareness and a commitment to working with end-users. The project shows how PTE’s core skills gained the confidence of various clients, and produced a building of considerable quality."
