PTE designed this infant and junior school for a site in Islington. The existing Church of England school occupied two very cramped sites with inadequate facilities. The architects suggested merging the junior school site with land belonging to an associated development company and building a new school with affordable flats above.
The design offers a variety of general and specialist teaching spaces and a large hall, which can be separated for community use out-of-hours.
The flats have a completely separate entrance and face south, away from the noisier school activities. The construction comprises solid walls with insulated render above the concrete frame and brick structure of the school, which has a lightweight steel hall and administrative wing with roof garden above.
