St Luke’s Community Centre and East Central Apartments, Islington
2011 - 2015
- Site area 0.3181
East Central is a modern community charity with older people’s activities and services at its core, and is undertaking a programme of refurbishment and expansion to enable it to reach out to the whole community. The existing community centre occupies a former Victorian school building, and has recently undergone a major programme of refurbishment.
The new community cafe will be located directly off Central Street, on a prominent corner of the existing building and directly next to the new front entrance to the centre. It will be open to the public and have access to a first-floor roof terrace. A multipurpose room will be added to the north-east corner of the centre and look out into the newly landscaped courtyard.
New homes will be wrapped around the perimeter of the site. A six-storey mixed tenure apartment block will overlook Paton Street with a 155sqm ground and lower-ground floor commercial unit accessed from Central Street. The homes will consist of ground and lower ground duplex units; four floors of one- and two-bedroom flats, all with private south facing balconies; and three-bedroom penthouses with south-facing terraces. Family homes are also provided in five three-storey houses for affordable rent at the rear of the site.
The courtyard between the existing centre and the new homes will be landscaped to form a new access driveway, parking courtyard, play garden and productive allotment garden.
