The site lies on the north side of the Regent’s Canal and originally consisted of a strip of industrial units which separated Arlington Avenue from the waterside. On this site we have created a mews-style scheme of seven two-storey houses designed to Lifetime Homes standard and 425sqm of flexible workspace designed to retain existing employment capacity. Access to the scheme runs from Arlington Avenue along the north boundary of the site, with the footprint of the building forming a continuous strip alongside the canal towpath.
One of the key requirements of the planners was that the scheme should not overlook the houses to the north. This has been achieved by incorporating terraces which are partly concealed by external aluminium louvres which wrap around the entire scheme at first and second floor level, and which complement the existing industrial aesthetic.
The main living spaces are at first floor level, and look south over the Regent’s Canal through the louvre skin. There are additional canalside roof terraces at second floor level accessed via a central rooftop lantern which brings natural light into the main living and circulation spaces on the lower floors.
